The 2016 SA National Track, Para-cycling and Omnium Championships, taking place at the Westbourne Cycling Track in Port Elizabeth from 28 March to 3 April, will be selection races for the High Performance (HP) squad for Elite and Junior riders.
Newly elected Track Cycling High Performance Manager, Martin van Wyk, understands the onus on him in taking on the new position just two weeks ahead of the National Championships. With a passion to grow Track Cycling in South Africa, Van Wyk has realised the need for more competitive training and racing opportunities for our riders.
“The purpose of selecting a high performance squad is to have various training opportunities hosted in all the provinces over the upcoming year,” said Van Wyk. “Unfortunately, this will have to be self-funded for now. With these training opportunities, the aim will be to keep our riders at the necessary level and be primed for any international opportunities that may arise.
“Cycling South Africa’s Track Commission is geared to achieve exposure to more racing opportunities and with the foundational training opportunities, the ideal of racing abroad is attainable.”
Selection of the High Performance Squads will be based on the SA National Track Championships, SA Omnium Championships and the 2016 Provincial Track Championship results.
Van Wyk said that the Selectors would be looking at all timed events and also bunch race results with the aim of building a Team Sprint and Team Pursuit team, or teams, as a start. The focus on the training opportunities will be on the Elite and Junior Men and Women.
“The Masters selection for the UCI Masters Track World Championships in Manchester will also take place based on the results of the SA National Track and SA Omnium Championships in Port Elizabeth at the end of March,” said Van Wyk.
