For the first time in nearly a decade, the Lions Karoo to Coast will have Cycling South Africa sanctioning. This prestigious event takes place on Sunday, 22 September 2024, drawing in competitive riders and reigniting elite race rivalries. Cherise Willeit will battle Catherine Colyn on a gravel-suited course in the women’s race. Local stars Matthys and Cronje Beukes, alongside Tristan Nortje, will face off in the men’s race.
1,700 Riders to Brave the 95km Course
In addition to the elite racers, 1,700 non-elite riders will tackle the 95-kilometer route from Uniondale to Knysna. Weather forecasts predict cool, clear conditions, with temperatures between 8 and 20 degrees. There is a slight chance of rain, with 0.7 millimeters forecast for De Vlugt and the Knysna Sports Fields.
Route Conditions: What to Expect
Route specialist Stuart Lightley confirmed good conditions along most of the route. “The Ou Wapad remains the roughest section, which will challenge gravel bikes,” Lightley said. “However, the section from Avontuur to Kom se Pad is in great shape, which should help elite riders set a fast pace.”
Safety Reminders for Riders
Race director Zandile Meneses urged riders to exercise caution. “Loose gravel on the Ou Wapad and Gouna descents could be hazardous,” Meneses warned. “Riders will also pass through a game farm, offering the chance to spot wildlife. However, safety is paramount, so keep your distance from animals.”
Elite Men Aim to Break 12-Year Record
Elite racers like Tristan Nortje and the Beukes brothers are expected to lead the men’s field. Ultra-endurance specialist Freddie Visser is also set to challenge them. Charles Keey’s 2012 course record of 3 hours, 3 minutes, and 13 seconds could be in danger, though headwinds in the first half may slow things down.
Women’s Race: A Battle of Champions
In the women’s race, Cherise Willeit and Catherine Colyn are set for a thrilling duel. Lehane Oosthuizen will also be a strong contender. With a mixed start group, positioning within the pack will be key. Ariane Lüthi’s 2012 record of 3 hours, 31 minutes, and 33 seconds remains the time to beat.
