South Coast local Hayley Smith is the rider to beat at the Sappi Scottburgh MTB & Trail Run this Sunday. As a Team Bell rider, Smith has dominated women’s mountain biking on the South Coast for years. It’s rare for her to lose on the trails she knows so well around Scottburgh.
Familiar Trails Despite New Race Village
Despite the event’s new start and finish at Crocworld Conservation Centre, Smith remains the overwhelming favorite. She knows the local trails like the back of her hand and is expected to claim another title.
Strong Performance at Swiss Epic
Smith recently competed in the Swiss Epic, where she and teammate Sanchia Malan finished eighth in the elite women’s category. The 341km Swiss race over five days was grueling, so the 45km Scottburgh course should be easy by comparison.
Daniel van der Watt Eyes Men’s Victory
In the men’s race, Daniel van der Watt of DriveTrain Academy is the favorite. Though he’s had a quiet year, his strong form always makes him a contender. Once he gets ahead, he’s tough to catch.
Exciting New Routes for Riders and Runners
The new race village at Crocworld offers fresh route changes. The 45km MTB route remains mostly the same but starts at a new point. Shorter 12km and 20km routes will feature completely new trails. Trail runners tackling the 5km and 12km distances will also experience new paths.
Improved Logistics for Participants
The shift to Crocworld eliminates past parking and logistical issues. Organizers, Ward Events, expect riders and runners to enjoy easier access to the trails.
