Marzaan Mellett took second at the Blue Diamond Classic outside Cullinan on Saturday, 12 September, after Cycle Nation helped shape an aggressive women’s race.

Cycle Nation started with Mellett, Melissa Kretzinger and Carmen Luckemeyer in the women’s peloton. The team stayed prominent as the race moved from a controlled opening phase into a series of decisive attacks.

The conditions were relatively good when the race began. The women’s bunch remained largely intact through the first 40 kilometres, with no early move gaining decisive separation.

Blue Diamond Classic opens after Botha attack

The first major split came at about 45 kilometres. Megan Botha attacked from the front and forced an immediate response from the bunch.

Kretzinger reacted quickly for Cycle Nation and covered the move. She joined Botha in a two-rider breakaway, and the pair opened a gap over the main group.

That move gave Cycle Nation an early presence in the key phase of the race. It also forced the main group to organise behind, with the front of the race now clearly defined.

The break stayed clear until roughly 60 kilometres into the event. At that point, Mellett decided to bridge across from the chasing group.

Lucy Young and Tennille Otto, both riding for Tshenolo Women’s Pro Cycling Team, followed closely. The three riders successfully reached Botha and Kretzinger at the front.

The junction created a stronger leading group and reset the race. Cycle Nation now had two riders in the decisive selection, with Mellett and Kretzinger both present.

Mellett wins sprint for second after late selection

The race changed again shortly before the route entered Cullinan. Between 68 and 70 kilometres, Botha attacked for a second time and opened a gap.

Mellett and Kretzinger worked to limit the losses and keep Botha within reach. Behind Botha, the fight for the remaining podium places stayed unresolved.

Mellett also launched several attacks of her own. She tried to distance Young and Otto as the race moved toward its final phase.

Botha held her advantage to the finish and won by approximately 15 seconds. The victory came after she had initiated both major moves of the race.

Behind her, the final podium places came down to a three-rider sprint. Mellett finished strongest and secured second place ahead of Young, while Otto also contested the sprint.

The result continued Mellett’s strong 2026 season and added another podium to her campaign. It also underlined Cycle Nation’s influence on the race, especially through Kretzinger’s early move and front-group work.

Kretzinger’s response to Botha’s first attack proved important for the team. Her presence in the break kept Cycle Nation represented before Mellett bridged across.

Mellett’s runner-up finish came one day before the Gauteng Criterium Championships. She would go on to claim the U23 title there, adding further momentum to her weekend.

Botha took a hard-earned win, while Mellett, Young and Otto completed a closely fought battle for the remaining podium positions.
