Demi Vollering defends European road title one week after world championship win

Demi Vollering defended her European road title in Sencur, Slovenia, adding another major jersey one week after winning her first world championship.

The Dutch rider delivered a decisive solo victory on October 03, 2026, attacking on the final lap and holding off a high-class chase. Her latest win extended a remarkable season and confirmed her status as the dominant force in the women’s peloton.

The 130km elite women’s road race offered a different challenge to last week’s world championship in Montréal. The opening two thirds were mainly flat, but the final circuit changed the race completely.

Riders faced the Možjanca climb twice on the finishing laps. The ascent measured only 2.1km, but its 10.4 percent average gradient gave the strongest climbers a clear launchpad.

Vollering used that terrain with precision. On the final lap, she went clear with Poland’s Kasia Niewiadoma and Dutch teammate Puck Pieterse. The trio distanced the other favourites on the climb before Vollering made her winning move.

With just under 15km remaining, the new world champion accelerated again and quickly opened a gap. Niewiadoma chased, while Pieterse sat on behind her national teammate.

At 12.2km to go, Niewiadoma and Pieterse trailed by 34 seconds. Elisa Longo Borghini of Italy and Germany’s Antonia Niedermaier soon joined them. Switzerland’s Marlen Reusser bridged across shortly after.

The chase now held numerical strength, but it never brought Vollering back. She continued alone toward the finish and secured her second major championship victory in eight days.

Pieterse wins sprint for silver after Niewiadoma crash

The battle for the remaining medals changed in the closing kilometres. Niewiadoma crashed near the finish and lost any chance of reaching the podium.

Pieterse then won the sprint for second place, finishing five seconds behind Vollering. Reusser took third, with Longo Borghini fourth. Niedermaier came in 15 seconds down, while Niewiadoma limped home 45 seconds behind the winner.

Vollering called the campaign a “golden year” after adding the European jersey to her world title. She also noted that only the time trial remained before the offseason.

The victory continued a season built on repeated success and consistency. Vollering said winning still motivates her, adding that it “never gets boring” as she keeps chasing improvement.

Early breakaway shapes the European road race

The day’s early move formed inside the opening 10km. Austria’s Carina Schrempf and Belgium’s Margot Vanpachtenbeke went clear and stayed away until 39km remained.

The first ascent of the Možjanca climb then brought the favourites into focus. Reusser attacked with 35km to go and forced a dangerous selection.

That group included Vollering, Pieterse, Longo Borghini, Niedermaier, Niewiadoma and France’s Juliette Berthet. Despite the quality in the move, the terrain after the descent allowed a larger regrouping.

Franziska Koch of Germany and Denmark’s Cecilie Uttrup Ludwig tried next with 28km remaining. They built a 25-second advantage, but the peloton caught them with 19km to go.

Liane Lippert then attacked on a ramp and drew out Switzerland’s Noemi Rüegg and the Netherlands’ Femke De Vries. The trio pushed toward the climb with a 20-second lead.

That move ended with 16km remaining. Vollering, Pieterse and Niewiadoma then took control on the uphill, setting up the decisive moment of the race.

When Vollering surged, nobody could follow. The European champion rode away from an elite chasing group and closed another landmark week in commanding style.
