Demi Vollering won the European Championships road race in Slovenia on Saturday, adding another major title to a season already defined by dominance.
The Dutch rider arrived with fresh rainbow bands after winning the World Championships road race one week earlier. She travelled back from Montréal to make her first appearance in the jersey and defend the European title she won in France last year.
Vollering delivered the decisive move on the final climb. She attacked from a lead trio that included Dutch teammate Puck Pieterse and Poland’s Kasia Niewiadoma-Phinney.
The group behind swelled during the chase, but Vollering stayed clear to take a solo victory. Pieterse completed a Dutch one-two by winning silver, while Swiss rider Marlen Reusser took bronze.
European Championships road race adds to Vollering’s landmark year
The result continued a remarkable run for Vollering and her FDJ United-Suez team. Across the season, she has collected first victories in several of cycling’s biggest events.
Her wins this year include the Tour of Flanders, the Giro d’Italia Women and the World Championships road race. She also claimed her second Tour de France Femmes avec Zwift title in August.
That Tour victory included three stage wins, underlining the breadth of her form across different races and terrains. The European Championships road race offered another chance to show that strength in national colours.
After the finish, Vollering made clear that victory still motivates her. She told journalists that she loves winning and said it “never gets boring” for her.
She also pointed beyond results, saying her drive comes from daily improvement and discovering what remains possible in the future.
Vollering praised the Dutch squad after another collective success. She described Pieterse’s silver medal as “a beautiful second place for Puck today.”
Dutch strength shows as Pieterse takes silver
The Dutch team’s one-two finish reflected both individual quality and tactical depth. Vollering had the finishing strength to go alone, while Pieterse remained strong enough to secure second place.
Niewiadoma-Phinney had been part of the decisive selection on the final climb. However, the medals ultimately went to Vollering, Pieterse and Reusser after the late chase failed to bring the winner back.
For Vollering, the race also carried symbolic weight. She lined up as the reigning world champion and left Slovenia with another jersey-winning performance.
Her victory reinforced her position at the top of the women’s peloton after a campaign filled with marquee wins. Few riders have matched that level of consistency across the sport’s biggest stages.
Time trial challenge comes next
Vollering is scheduled to race again for the Netherlands on Wednesday 7 October in the European Championships time trial.
That event remains one she has not yet won. This edition could offer one of her strongest opportunities, given her current form.
Reusser, however, stands as a major obstacle. The Swiss rider has won four of the past five editions of the European time trial and also reached the road race podium in Slovenia.
Vollering’s road race win ensures she enters that next contest with momentum. It also places another significant title in a season that has already included triumphs in the Classics, Grand Tours and world championship racing.
