Marzaan Mellett gravel form continued with a commanding win at the Spring Fast One Gravel Challenge, where she secured the Gauteng Provincial Elite Women’s Gravel Championship title.
The Cycle Nation rider won the 142-kilometre women’s race in the south of Johannesburg. She crossed the line in 5:00:23 after controlling the contest from the front during a difficult second half.
The race opened in good weather on a flat and fast course. A light breeze was present early, but the wind strengthened steadily as the kilometres passed. Those conditions added pressure to a race already shaped by mechanical problems behind the eventual winner.
Mellett was part of a three-rider contest in the early stages. Tshenolo Pro Women’s Cycling Team riders Sonica Klopper and Taneal Otto matched her in the opening phase, keeping the women’s race tightly grouped at the front.
Marzaan Mellett gravel attack proves decisive
The race changed before the halfway mark when Klopper suffered a mechanical. Otto was also delayed by a mechanical not long afterwards, leaving Mellett with a clear opportunity to press on.
She continued to apply pressure and built a decisive advantage by the midpoint of the race. At halfway, Mellett held a lead of about seven minutes over Otto, who was then in second place.
The second half offered no easy run to the finish. The wind increased, and the route remained exposed and fast. Mellett stayed composed, held her rhythm, and managed the gap through the closing kilometres.
Otto finished second in 5:06:37, ending 6 minutes and 14 seconds behind Mellett. Caitlin Mee completed the Elite Women’s podium in third place with a time of 5:22:15.
The result gave Mellett both the race victory and the Gauteng Provincial Elite Women’s Gravel Championship title. It also added another provincial title to Cycle Nation’s 2026 campaign.
Strong run continues across road and gravel
Mellett’s latest win followed an already successful stretch across disciplines. She finished second at the Blue Diamond Classic the previous weekend, then claimed the Gauteng Provincial U23 Criterium title.
That sequence underlined her consistency on road and gravel, with three significant performances arriving in quick succession. The Spring Fast One result confirmed her ability to convert form into a major gravel title.
Cycle Nation Team Manager Lincoln King said the performance reflected more than a single race result. He pointed to Mellett’s progress during the 2026 season and described her recent run as a “rich vein of form”.
King said the combination of her Blue Diamond Classic podium, U23 criterium title, and Gauteng Elite Women’s Gravel title showed encouraging progression. He added that it bodes well for the remainder of the season.
For Cycle Nation, the win strengthens a campaign already marked by provincial success. For Mellett, it confirms growing range across different race formats, from criterium racing to long-distance gravel competition.
