Pogacar Vingegaard duel tilts further after Col du Haag attack falls short

The Pogacar Vingegaard duel moved further in the Slovenian’s favour on stage 14 of the Tour de France.

Jonas Vingegaard finally raced aggressively against Tadej Pogačar on the Col du Haag. Yet the yellow jersey never appeared under serious pressure. Pogačar accelerated near the summit and gained another 54 seconds on his main rival.

Vingegaard now sits 4:30 behind Pogačar in the general classification. The Dane still described his ride as encouraging after his strongest mountain display of this Tour.

Pogacar Vingegaard duel exposes familiar gap

Visma-Lease a Bike tried to harden the race midway up the Col du Haag. Sepp Kuss moved to the front and lifted the tempo in the yellow jersey group. Vingegaard then took over with a long spell on the front.

The move came as UAE Team Emirates-XRG showed rare signs of strain. Brandon McNulty and Adam Yates lost contact early on the lower slopes. Isaac del Toro also hovered near the back of the group.

Vingegaard looked over his shoulder several times while setting the pace. Pogačar remained close behind, giving little away. Later, he said the effort felt like suffering “in a good way.”

The decisive response came 1,500 metres from the top of the Col du Haag. Pogačar launched his acceleration and Vingegaard initially limited the gap. The world champion then edged further clear before the summit.

Vingegaard remained the strongest rider behind Pogačar for most of the chase. However, his work left him exposed in the closing metres. Del Toro and Paul Seixas of Decathlon CMA CGM came past him late.

The finishing position mattered less than the time gap for Vingegaard. His deficit to Pogačar grew again, despite his most assertive climbing effort of the race.

Vingegaard takes positives from aggressive ride

Speaking to TV2 after the stage, Vingegaard focused on his sensations rather than the time loss. He said his legs were “extremely good” and added that he was happy with how he rode.

Pogačar gave a more cautious assessment during his press conference at Le Markstein. He praised Vingegaard’s performance on the front, while suggesting the Dane lacks his usual sharpness.

Pogačar said Vingegaard looked slightly below the level he showed in recent Tours. He also left room for a change in the longer mountains. He mentioned Alpe d’Huez as a place where Vingegaard could still gain an “extra boost.”

Vingegaard’s own explanation matched that theme. He won the Giro d’Italia in May and admitted that effort may have affected his explosiveness. He said the team expected he might not be his sharpest version after the Giro.

That shaped Visma’s tactics on stage 14. Vingegaard said his best chance would likely come on a long, hard section. Kuss set the pace first, before Vingegaard tried to continue the pressure himself.

The terrain did not fully suit that plan. Vingegaard noted a small descent and a following section that rose for several kilometres without being especially steep.

Alpe d’Huez offers a final chance

Vingegaard can still look toward the final days of the Tour. The route includes back-to-back finishes at Alpe d’Huez. His endurance from the Giro could yet help on those longer Alpine tests.

He has overturned a Tour in the Alps before. His 2023 victory was built across two decisive days in the high mountains. This time, however, Pogačar carries a far larger cushion.

Pogačar has shown no sign of repeating past Alpine collapses. He suffered badly on the Col du Granon in 2022 and the Col de la Loze in 2023. Nothing similar has appeared during this Tour.

His lead may also grow before the race reaches those final mountain stages. The race heads to Plateau de Solaison on Sunday, where another Pogačar gain remains possible.

Visma’s support group also looks stretched. The team brought three riders who raced with Vingegaard at the Giro. Victor Campenaerts, Davide Piganzoli and Kuss have not reproduced their Giro impact here.

Matteo Jorgenson has dealt with illness, while Bruno Armirail has been affected by a crash earlier in the Tour. Visma placed Campenaerts, Jorgenson and Armirail in the early break on Saturday. None became a useful satellite rider for Vingegaard.

For now, the pattern remains unchanged. Vingegaard asked his hardest question of the Tour. Pogačar answered it with another acceleration and a stronger hold on yellow.
