Demi Vollering delivered a Vollering stage win with major GC consequences on stage 5 of the 2026 Tour de France Femmes avec Zwift.
The FDJ United-Suez leader won Wednesday in Belleville-en-Beaujolais from a three-rider move that shaped the overall race. Vollering beat yellow jersey Marlen Reusser of Movistar and Kasia Niewiadoma-Phinney of Canyon-SRAM in the sprint.
Reusser retained the race lead, but Vollering cut her deficit to 12 seconds with four stages remaining. Niewiadoma-Phinney moved firmly into the picture at 1:17 overall.
Vollering stage win follows decisive late climbs
The race turned on the Col de Durbize and Mont Brouilly, the final two climbs of the day. FDJ United-Suez increased the pressure on Durbize, where defending champion Pauline Ferrand-Prévot began losing contact.
Anna van der Breggen also slipped away from the front group as the GC battle intensified. Ferrand-Prévot later conceded well over two minutes, a serious blow to her title defence.
On Mont Brouilly, Vollering attacked several times, but Reusser answered each move. Niewiadoma-Phinney also accelerated, yet the three strongest riders stayed together.
That trio then committed to the move and drove clear of the remaining favourites. Their collaboration created the most important time gaps of the race so far.
Reusser led into the finishing straight, where Niewiadoma-Phinney opened an early sprint. Vollering responded late and closed the gap just before the line, with Reusser taking second.
After the finish, Vollering praised the collective work of FDJ United-Suez and called it a “really cool race.” She said the sprint felt “very long” and required every metre of the finishing straight.
Vollering also noted that Reusser remains difficult to beat. She said the Swiss rider is “very strong” and must now defend a narrow lead.
Breakaway fight keeps stage 5 unsettled
The opening 40km brought repeated attacks across the first three categorised climbs, including the second-category Côte de Cenves. No move gained lasting control until Carlotta Cipressi of Human Powered Health attacked with 105km remaining.
Puck Pieterse of Fenix-Premier Tech took maximum mountain points on the first three climbs. She extended her lead in the Queen of the Mountains competition.
Lorena Wiebes of SD Worx-Protime placed second at the intermediate sprint behind Cipressi. That result strengthened her position in the points classification.
Cipressi was caught with 99km to go, restarting the contest to form a break. Pieterse again topped the Col de Fontmartin after 54.1km of racing.
A group of around 20 riders then escaped before the Col de Gerbet. It included Antonia Niedermaier, who began the day ninth overall, 1:43 behind Reusser.
The move also featured Femke de Vries, Franzi Koch, Lianne Lippert, Niamh Fisher-Black, Dominika Włodarczyk and Pieterse. The gap reached 40 seconds, then grew further as the favourites reorganised.
Pieterse took more maximum points on the Gerbet and repeated the feat on the Côte de Pruzilly. With 48km left, the 19-rider break held 1:50 over the favourites.
The advantage fell quickly on the Col de Durbize. Włodarczyk, Lippert, Magdeleine Vallieres, Niedermaier and De Vries were among those pushing on from the break.
Behind them, Célia Gery delivered a powerful lead-out for Vollering. The acceleration reduced the gap to 40 seconds over the Durbize and put Ferrand-Prévot under pressure.
The Reusser and Vollering group caught the break with just under 23km remaining. Reusser then surged at the bonus sprint, taking six seconds, two more than Vollering.
