Red Bull co-leaders Remco Evenepoel and Florian Lipowitz faced fresh scrutiny at the Tour de France after a public disagreement over team tactics at Gavarnie-Gèdre.
The issue followed Thursday’s mountain finish, where Tadej Pogačar appeared to put the Tour beyond serious reach. Yet on Friday morning in Hagetmau, attention shifted to the Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe bus.
Evenepoel had been beaten to third place by UAE Team Emirates rider Isaac del Toro. The Belgian finished almost three minutes behind Pogačar and then voiced frustration with Lipowitz.
Evenepoel said he had asked Lipowitz for help before the sprint for third. He complained that the lead-out never came.
He also referred to the Volta a Catalunya, where he said he had worked for Lipowitz for 30 kilometres. In contrast, Evenepoel said he had asked for one kilometre of help at the Tour.
Red Bull co-leaders try to move past the dispute
The comments cut through the usual controlled messaging around Tour de France leadership plans. They also challenged the smoother public image presented since Evenepoel joined the team’s Tour project.
Red Bull’s own media operation had previously promoted the relationship between the pair in very warm terms. The Red Bulletin described them as having bonded quickly during a Mount Teide training camp.
Team manager Ralph Denk later tried to reduce the temperature around the story. Speaking on the team’s in-house podcast, he said the issue had grown larger than reality.
Denk also said Evenepoel and Lipowitz had laughed together at dinner. The next morning, head of sports Zak Dempster took a similarly measured line with reporters.
Dempster called it a moment born from elite competition and human emotion. He did not present it as a crisis inside the team.
Evenepoel also tried to close the matter on Friday. He told Belgian media that everything had been discussed and clarified.
When asked what he had said to Lipowitz at the hotel, Evenepoel drew a clear line. He said he did not need to reveal everything, adding that private matters should remain private.
Tour podium ambitions remain alive
The flashpoint does not appear likely to reshape Red Bull’s Tour de France objectives by itself. The team entered the race with two leaders, and that structure always carried tension.
Both riders have reason to target the podium in Paris. Evenepoel sits fourth overall at 3:30, while Lipowitz is seventh at 4:00.
Pogačar’s advantage has left the yellow jersey effectively beyond Red Bull and the rest of the field. Still, a podium place remains realistic for at least one of the pair.
The history of the Tour includes many difficult dual-leader arrangements. Some of the most famous internal battles still ended with victory for the team involved.
In this case, Red Bull may not need one rider to fully sacrifice his race. The road and the remaining stages can decide the team hierarchy.
Evenepoel began the Tour looking lean and sharp. He appeared stronger than Lipowitz in the early exchanges of the race.
On the Tourmalet, however, Lipowitz climbed slightly better than his co-leader. Evenepoel limited the gap, crested 20 seconds behind, and rejoined on the descent.
The route still offers encouragement to Evenepoel. A relatively manageable course and a flat time trial at the start of the third week suit his strengths.
Lipowitz can also take confidence from his Tourmalet performance. That ride followed a less convincing start and showed his podium challenge remains credible.
The central question now is whether Red Bull can manage ambition without losing efficiency. Internal rivalry can create problems, but it can also sharpen both riders.
Evenepoel’s directness ensured the disagreement became public. It also underlined why he remains one of cycling’s most closely watched figures, even when he is not winning.
