Crosswinds Shape Summer Classic as Luckemeyer Takes Third

Cycle Nation rider Carmen Luckemeyer finished third at the Summer Classic Elite Women’s race on Sunday, 25 October, near Bronkhorstspruit in Gauteng.

The 91-kilometre road race turned on a major crosswind split in the second half. Chané Scully made the decisive selection and rode on to victory in 2:19:23.

Megan Rebstein-Dovey finished second in 2:27:51, while Luckemeyer completed the podium one second later in 2:27:52. Scully’s winning margin was more than eight minutes over her nearest challengers.

Crosswinds decide the Summer Classic

The key move came 53 kilometres into the race. The peloton turned left onto a section of road exposed to crosswinds, and the bunch split under pressure.

That change in wind direction shaped the Elite Women’s race. Riders had to react immediately, while positioning became crucial across the exposed section.

Scully stayed with the leading selection as the race fractured. Luckemeyer and Rebstein-Dovey missed that front group and had to chase with about 38 kilometres remaining.

Once the gap opened, the front of the race became difficult to reach. Scully capitalised on the split and built a clear advantage before the finish.

Crosswinds remain among road cycling’s hardest tactical tests. Strength matters, but so do timing, awareness and the ability to hold position before the decisive moment.

Luckemeyer adds another 2026 podium

For Luckemeyer, third place added another podium to a consistent 2026 season across road and gravel racing. Earlier this year, she also finished third at the Crater Express Gravel Race.

The result continued Cycle Nation’s domestic racing campaign across road, gravel and mountain bike events during 2026.

Cycle Nation Team Manager Lincoln King welcomed the podium while pointing to the importance of the race-defining split.

‘It’s another podium for Carmen, which is a positive result,’ King said. He added that the decisive moment came when the race split in the crosswinds.

King said positioning becomes critical at that point, and recovery becomes difficult once a gap forms. He noted that those moments often decide bike races.

He also highlighted Luckemeyer’s consistency during the season. The team will take lessons from the performance into the final races of the year.

Scully turns selection into victory

Scully’s ride stood out in the Elite Women’s competition. Her ability to remain in the leading group after 53 kilometres proved decisive.

From there, she finished comfortably ahead of the remaining podium contenders. The final time gap reflected how important the wind split became.

The Summer Classic started from the Willem Prinsloo Agricultural Museum near Rayton. The event offered another competitive outing for the women’s field as South African road racing moves toward its final major events.

With Ride Joburg scheduled for November, the race also offered riders and teams a chance to assess form and tactical execution. For Cycle Nation, Luckemeyer’s third place provides another marker before one of Gauteng’s major road cycling events.
