The Paul Seixas Tour debut will open in Barcelona on Saturday with unusual attention around the 19-year-old Frenchman.

Tadej Pogacar enters as the race favourite, but Seixas has become one of the central stories before racing begins. His Thursday press conference drew a packed room and felt like an early race event.

Seixas will start the Tour de France as the youngest rider in the race since Adrien Cento in 1937. That statistic explains only part of the attention around him.

His debut has also invited comparisons with Bernard Hinault’s first Tour appearance in 1978. Hinault won that race, but his situation was very different.

Hinault was already 23 and had won the Vuelta a España. His directeur sportif, Cyrille Guimard, had delayed his Tour debut until he believed Hinault could win.

Seixas arrives with far less Grand Tour experience. He has never raced for more than eight days in a single event.

His most recent stage race was the Tour Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes. A crash forced him out early on the final stage.

Paul Seixas Tour debut carries rare attention

Decathlon CMA CGM’s decision to select Seixas has created debate in France and beyond. The rider now wants to find out where he stands.

Speaking to L’Équipe, Seixas said every rider wants to win. He also stressed that the Tour de France represents a new experience.

He said he first needs to gather experience before making larger claims about winning the race. For now, he wants to measure his performance level.

That caution does not mean he plans to ride anonymously. Seixas said the team priority remains the general classification.

He has not defined a target position. He said the race itself will show what is possible over three weeks.

Seixas also made clear that he will not take risks without purpose. He said any major risks would need to serve the general classification.

Recovery into week two is the main question

The biggest unknown is not his talent, but his durability. Seixas has not yet tested himself deep into a three-week race.

He downplayed the idea that he carries specific fears into his Tour debut. Instead, he framed the challenge around recovery.

He said the key question is how his body responds after 10 or 15 days. Hard moments, he suggested, can become useful lessons.

Seixas has already shown a strong capacity to learn during his first elite experiences. At Strade Bianche in March, he avoided chasing Pogacar too long on Monte Sante Marie.

He also addressed his crash at the Tour Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes as a lesson. He said it came from his own mistake, not impatience.

Seixas added that he could have positioned himself differently on the descent. He accepted the error as part of racing.

Barcelona team time trial offers first test

Seixas will begin with the 19km team time trial in Barcelona on Saturday. That stage gives Decathlon CMA CGM an immediate chance to limit losses.

The squad will also want a stronger showing than in the equivalent test at the Tour Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes.

Seixas described the team as solid after its early adjustments. He pointed to the fast course and two late climbs as the main challenges.

The setting underlined the scale of his arrival at the Tour. Seixas smiled as he looked at the media gathered around him.

He said he knew the Tour would be “another dimension” and now had proof. For Seixas, that dimension becomes real on Saturday.
